First you have your basic starter kits, for example Crush. What makes them more of beginner drum set is the quality of their drums, of course there are higher quality and more expensive drums sets that Crush make, but they also have some of the cheapest sets for sale.
Next up are sets for your more experienced drummer, for example Ludwig or Gretsch. The same goes for these drum sets as well they are more expensive because of their quality and the amount of work that goes into making them
Finally drum sets for your very seasoned drummer, your best bet would be DW or Pearl. Now the interesting thing about Pearl is that they can go either way, they are also a very good starter kit as well, but they also make some of the best sounding kits out there.

Now what makes a drum set sound better than other kits. Well a very long and drawn out processed is put in to making drums but to put it in layman's terms; the type of wood that the drum is made of and the number of layers of plastic that the drum head is made with are the main factors.
